Psychological Testing & Evaluation:
Understanding the Story of You
-
What is psychological assessment?
Psychological assessment (aka testing or evaluation) is a process that allows for an in-depth examination of a client’s strengths and weaknesses. Assessments are not “tests” like the kind you’d find in school. Like putting together a puzzle to see the whole picture, assessments provide a comprehensive look at the whole person.
Our approach to assessment is neurodivergent-affirming, meaning that we appreciate and identify the strengths that make each person unique. We conduct evaluations that explore multiple parts of a persons life, including their functioning at home, work, and/or school, in order to get the most complete picture of who they are.

How would assessment benefit me or my child?
Testing is recommended for many reasons. Testing can help your provider figure out if you meet criteria for a specific diagnosis. Testing can also determine your child’s ability level and if they would qualify for school services. Testing can also be used to help guide treatment recommendations for psychiatrists or other physicians. Testing is not right for everyone, but it can open doors and help you better understand yourself or your child.

What steps are involved in an assessment?
If you would like an evaluation, reach out to us via the Contact Us button. Most assessments work like this:
Our admin will respond to you and schedule an initial phone call (~15 minutes) to determine your testing needs.
An hour-long intake interview will be scheduled via our patient portal. This interview will be telehealth with the patient or patient’s parents.
Testing will be scheduled in person in our office. Testing typically lasts between 3-4 hours. Check out “How to Prepare for Psychological Testing” below for a handout on what to expect!
Dr. Sparks will examine your results and write a comprehensive report outlining results and recommendations for future care.
The assessment will conclude with a 30-60 minute feedback session, usually via telehealth, to discuss results and recommendations.

Can I give the report to my doctor/therapist/other professional?
Absolutely! You can give your report to anyone you choose. Dr. Sparks will also send one copy free of charge to any provider with a written release. Extra copies of the report are available at extra charge.
Please note that we are currently unable to offer evaluations for dementia, traumatic brain injury, or custody/legal issues at this time.
